Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Formed as *bujь + *-ěti (or *-ati) from the eh₁-fientive *bʰowH-yeh₁-ti (or respectively the eh₂-causative *bʰowH-eh₂yé-ti), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewH- (“to inflate, to grow”). The secondary meaning related to rampaging and aggressiveness may have been partially influenced by the onomatopoeic *bew- (“to howl, to blow”).
