Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Latin Rōma. The substitution of ō with *i is enigmatic; many implausible propositions have been made. The source was probably Germanic (compare Proto-Germanic *Rūmō); it is possible to think of a back-formation from *rĩmьskъ, from a reflex of Proto-Germanic *Rūmiskaz with umlaut.
