Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ángulas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éngulos, equivalent to *h₂eng- + *-ъlъ. From the same Indo-European root also *ǫkotь and *paǫkъ (spider).

Cognate with Latin angulus, Sanskrit अङ्गुरि (aṅgúri, finger, toe), Ancient Greek ἀγκύλος (ankúlos, crooked, curved), and Proto-Germanic *ankulaz (ankle, hip).
