Proto-Germanic
Alternative forms
- *tinþaną (?)
Etymology
From Pre-Germanic *dendʰneti. The ultimate origin is unclear, as solid cognates outside of Germanic are lacking.[1] Osthoff suggests Proto-Indo-European *deh₂w- (“kindle, burn”) (Ancient Greek δαίω (daíō)), but Pokorny rejects this.[2]
