Possibly, via an earlier general sense “limb”, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰs-r-, from *ǵʰes- (hand). Compare Latin hīr (hand), Ancient Greek χείρ (kheír), Old Armenian ձեռն (jeṙn), Albanian dorë (hand), Tocharian A tsar, Hittite kissar.
