Etymology 1
From the Ancient Greek Ἴβηρος (Íbēros), Ἴβηρ (Íbēr), of unknown meaning; possibly a local hydronym. Compare Basque ibar (“valley”), ibai (“river”) as well as the rivers Ibar and Evros (Ancient Greek Ἕβρος (Hébros)).
