From Proto-Iranian *cwā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwā́ (compare Sanskrit श्वन् (śván)), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ. Cognate with Ancient Greek κύων (kúōn), Latin canis, Lithuanian šuo, Old Armenian շուն (šun), Old English hund (whence English hound).
