마파람
Korean
Etymology
Equivalent to 마 (ma, “south”) + 바람 (baram, “wind”). The aspiration in the second syllable suggests that in Middle Korean, the first component had a final /h/ as in *맣 (*mah).
Thus possibly from 맣〮 (máh, “monsoon”) + ᄇᆞᄅᆞᆷ (pòlòm, “wind”) as in the wind that brings the monsoon, although this usage is not attested in the Middle Korean corpus.
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ma̠pʰa̠ɾa̠m]
- Phonetic hangul: [마파람]
