Of native Korean origin. Attested in the 18th century as 곳어름 (goseoreum) and 고도롬 (godorom). Equivalent to modern 곧 (got-, “to be hard”) + 얼 (eol-, “to freeze”) + 음 (-eum, nominalisation suffix).
