Unclear. Schuessler (2007) lists two possible comparanda:

  • Proto-Kam-Sui *mpraːŋ¹ (ear (of grain)), which may be problematic due to inconsistent phonetic correspondence with the Middle Chinese form; and
  • Burmese အမှင် (a.hmang, stiff hair; bristles), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ma-ŋ (beard; moustache) (STEDT).

Pronunciation

Note:
  • mè̤ng - vernacular;
  • mòng - literary.
