From earlier 老辦老办 or 老班, from (lǎo, “a respectful prefix”) + (bàn, “to manage”) or (bān, “group”); and in 老闆老板 are phonetic loan characters; first attested as 老辦老办 in the 16th century (Yang, 2012).
