Etymology
Eberhard (1968) thought this and similar words like 封 (OC *poŋ, *poŋs, “mound, tumulus”) were all related and fundamentally meant "hump".
Or from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *brawŋ (“wild yak, buffalo”) (STEDT, Boodberg 1937, Schuessler, 2007), cognate with Tibetan འབྲོང ('brong, “wild yak”), Burmese ပြောင် (praung, “gaur”).
