Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *baːs) : semantic (earth) + phonetic (OC *buʔ).

Etymology

A late formation (後起字). Earlier forms of southern Chinese toponyms using the character were often written with the homophone (MC buH) in historical records dated from the Northern Wei to Ming dynasties, which has been conjectured to be a transcription of an earlier Kra-Dai word (Kang, 2010). Cf. (, “market”).
