From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɤŋꟲ (“bee; beeswax”), from Middle Chinese 蜂 (MC pʰɨoŋ, “bee; wasp”). Cognate with Thai ผึ้ง (pʉ̂ng), Lao ເຜິ້ງ (phœng) or ເຜີ້ງ (phœ̄ng), Lü ᦕᦹᧂᧉ (ṗhueng²), Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phüṅ).
