From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɤŋꟲ (bee; beeswax), from Middle Chinese (MC pʰɨoŋ, “bee; wasp”). Cognate with Thai ผึ้ง (pʉ̂ng), Lao ເຜິ້ງ (phœng) or ເຜີ້ງ (phœ̄ng), ᦕᦹᧂᧉ (ṗhueng²), Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phüṅ).
