From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɤŋꟲ (“bee; beeswax”), from Middle Chinese 蜂 (MC phjowng, “bee; wasp”). Cognate with Lao ເຜິ້ງ (phœng) or ເຜີ້ງ (phœ̄ng), Lü ᦕᦹᧂᧉ (ṗhueng²), Shan ၽိုင်ႈ (phūeng), Tai Nüa ᥚᥪᥒᥲ (phùeng), Tai Dam ꪹꪠꪷ꫁ꪉ, Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phüṅ).
