From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kɛːŋᴬ² (“soup; broth”), from Middle Chinese 羹 (MC kaeng, “thick soup”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Khün ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Lao ແກງ (kǣng), Lü ᦶᦂᧂ (k̇aeng), Thai แกง (gɛɛng), Tai Nüa ᥐᥦᥒ (kaeng), Saek เก๋ง.
