From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kɛːŋᴬ² (soup; broth), from Middle Chinese (MC kaeng, “thick soup”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Khün ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Lao ແກງ (kǣng), ᦶᦂᧂ (k̇aeng), Thai แกง (gɛɛng), Tai Nüa ᥐᥦᥒ (kaeng), Saek เก๋ง.
