ಜನಿವಾರ
Kannada
Etymology
First attested as Old Kannada ಜನ್ನವಿರ (jannavira), ಜನ್ನವರ (jannavara). The word was borrowed from Prakrit जण्णोववीय (jaṇṇovavīya), which is from Sanskrit यज्ञोपवीत (yajñopavīta). The term underwent vowel alteration as the /i/ from ಜನ್ನವಿರ (jannavira) seems to have influenced ಜನ್ನವರ (jannavara) to give rise to this term. For further explanation of the term's unusual form, see ಜನ್ನವಿರ (jannavira).
