Etymology

Inherited from Sanskrit वार्दल (vārdala), from वार्द (vārda, water-giving; rain cloud), a compound of वार् (vār, water) + (da, giving); the first element is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáHr̥ (water; rain), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wer ~ *weh₁r- (water, rain, flow). Cognate with Hindi बादल (bādal), Marathi वादळ (vādaḷ) and Bengali বাদল (badol). Wider cognate include Persian باران (bârân, rain), بارش (bâreš) (whence બારાન (bārān) and બારિશ (bāriś)), Ossetian уарын (waryn, rain), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭 (var, rain), Luwian 𒉿𒀀𒅈 (wār, water), Old Norse vari (liquid, water), Latvian jūra (sea), and Latin ūrīna (whence English urine), Avara.
