সুন্দর
Bengali
Etymology
Learned borrowing from Sanskrit सुन्दर (sundara), from earlier सूनर (sūnára, “possessing vital strength, mighty”) with addition of a medial plosive (-d-), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsu-Hnáras (“having good manpower”), a compound of *Hsu- (“good”) + *Hnáras (“manpower, man”); thus equivalent to সু- (śu-) + নর (nôr); for another case of addition of a plosive, see বাঁদর (bãdor, “monkey”). Doublet of সৌন্দর্য (śōundorjo) and সুঁদর (śũdor), a tadbhava.
