Inherited from Middle Bengali মাইয়া (maiẏa), from Prakrit *𑀫𑀸𑀇𑀆 (*māiā), from Sanskrit मातृका (mātṛkā, “(someone) like the mother”), from मातृ (mātṛ, “mother”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠝꠣꠁꠀ (maia), ꠝꠣꠁ (mai) and Assamese মাই (mai). Doublet of মা (ma), মাতা (mata), মাতৃ (matri), মাই (mai, “breast”), and মাসি (maśi).
