Inherited from Old Bengali *বাছৌর (*bāchaur) with syncope, from earlier *বাছরু (*bācharu) with metathesis, from Prakrit *𑀯𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀭𑀽𑀯 (*vaccharūva), from Sanskrit *वत्सरूप (vatsarūpa, literally calf-shaped), from वत्स (vatsa, calf) + रूप (rūpa, shape). Cognate with Assamese বাছৰু (basoru), Odia ବାଛରୁ (bachôru), Bihari बछ्रु (bachru), Gujarati વાછ્રું (vāchrũ), Marathi वास्रूं (vāsrū̃), Konkani वास्रुं (vāsrũ).
