Compound of পাঁউ (pãu) +‎ রুটি (ruṭi). The former is borrowed from Portuguese pão, from Old Galician-Portuguese pan, from Latin pānem, accusative singular form of pānis. Cognate with Gujarati પાઉં (pāũ), Marathi पाव (pāv), Sinhalese පාන් (pān).
