Inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀭𑀸𑀬𑀺𑀅 (dhammarāyia), from Sanskrit धर्मराजिक (dharmarājika, “belonging or related to the Dharmaraja”), from धर्मराज (dharmarāja, “king of the religion”, a title of the Buddha) + -इक (-ika), in turn from धर्म (dharma, “religion”) + राज (rāja, “king”), such named due to the presence of a Buddhist stupa near the town which was built during the reign of Ashoka.
