Inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀭𑀸𑀬𑀺𑀅 (dhammarāyia), from Sanskrit धर्मराजिक (dharmarājika, belonging or related to the Dharmaraja), from धर्मराज (dharmarāja, king of the religion, a title of the Buddha) + -इक (-ika), in turn from धर्म (dharma, religion) + राज (rāja, king), such named due to the presence of a Buddhist stupa near the town which was built during the reign of Ashoka.
