Inherited from Sanskrit *डुम्बर (ḍumbara), of non-Aryan substrate (possibly Munda) origin, perhaps the same source as these Sanskrit words for plants: उदुम्बर (udumbara, “cluster fig”), जम्बु (jambu, “jambul”), जम्बीर (jambīra, “citron”), तुम्ब (tumba, “Lagenaria vulgaris”), निम्बू (nimbū, “lemon”), कदम्ब (kadamba, “cadamba tree”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠒꠦꠃꠋꠞꠣ (ḍeuṅra), Chittagonian ডইঁর (ḍoĩr), Assamese ডিমৰু (dimoru), Odia ଡିମିରି (ḍimiri), ଡିମ୍ବିରି (ḍimbiri).
