Etymology
Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀺𑀗𑁆𑀕𑀟 (ciṅgaḍa), 𑀘𑀺𑀗𑁆𑀕𑀟𑀺 (ciṅgaḍi), from Sanskrit चिङ्गट (ciṅgaṭa), चिङ्गटि (ciṅgaṭi, “shrimp, crab, cricket”), from a non-Aryan substrate language, from which गाङ्गट (gāṅgaṭa, “shrimp”), कर्कट (karkaṭa, “crab”), and झिङ्ग (jhiṅga, “cricket”) were also probably borrowed (compare গাঙ্গট (gaṅgoṭ), কাঁকড়া (kãkoṛa), and ঝিঙ্গুর (jhiṅgur)). Cognate with Odia ଚିଙ୍ଗୁଡ଼ି (ciṅguṛi). Doublet of উচিঙ্গা (uciṅga) and উচুঙ্গ (ucuṅgo). For other sets of substrate borrowings, see ঝিনুক (jhinuk) and ডুমুর (ḍumur).
