Inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀝𑁆𑀞 (dhaṭṭha), from Sanskrit ধৃষ্ট (dhṛṣṭa, “bold; impudent”). Cognate with Bengali ডাঁট (ḍãṭ, “hard; unripe; difficult”), Odia ଧିଟ (dhiṭô, “shameless”), Marathi दाट (dāṭ, “dense; thick”), Hindi ढीठ (ḍhīṭh), Punjabi ਢੱਠ (ḍhaṭṭha).
