Inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀝𑁆𑀞 (dhaṭṭha), from Sanskrit ধৃষ্ট (dhṛṣṭa, bold; impudent). Cognate with Bengali ডাঁট (ḍãṭ, hard; unripe; difficult), Odia ଧିଟ (dhiṭô, shameless), Marathi दाट (dāṭ, dense; thick), Hindi ढीठ (ḍhīṭh), Punjabi ਢੱਠ (ḍhaṭṭha).
