Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘟𑘰𑘘 (dāṭa) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀁𑀤𑀝𑁆𑀝 (saṃdaṭṭa), 𑀲𑀁𑀤𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀬 (saṃdaṭṭaya)). Related to दाटणे (dāṭṇe), दडणे (daḍṇe), दडा (daḍā), दडपणे (daḍapṇe).
