Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (“to spread, stretch, extend”), an extension of *ster- (“spread”). Cognate with Ancient Greek στόρνῡμι (stórnūmi, “spread”), Latin sternō (“spread”), Proto-Slavic *stornà (“side, land”), *stérti (“to extend”); English strew.
