From Proto-Indo-Aryan *yā́ma, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáHma, from Proto-Indo-European *yéh₂-mn̥, from the root *yeh₂- (“to go, ride, travel, go in, enter”). By surface analysis, या (yā) + -मन् (-man).
