Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyaȷ́nás. Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬯𐬥𐬀 (yasna, “act of worship”), Latin ieiunus (“fasting, abstinent”), Persian جشن (jašn, “festival”). The Sanskrit root is यज् (yaj).
