From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mártas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mŕ̥tas, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥tós, from *mer- (“to die”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬀 (marəta), Ancient Greek μορτός (mortós).
