Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀟𑀼𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀤𑀺 (ḍubbadi), a Middle-Indo-Aryan metathesis of Prakrit 𑀩𑀼𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀢𑀺 (buḍḍati) (compare Sanskrit व्रुड् (vruḍ, sink)). Cognate with Maithili डुबब (ḍubab) / 𑒛𑒳𑒥𑒥 (ḍubaba), Nepali डुब्नु (ḍubnu), Punjabi ਡੁੱਬਣਾ (ḍubbaṇā) / ڈُبّݨا (ḍubbṇā), Gujarati ડૂબવું (ḍūbvũ), Marathi डुंबणे (ḍumbṇe), Odia ଡୁବିବା (ḍubiba), Bengali ডুবা (ḍuba), Assamese ডুবা (duba).
