Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀟𑀸𑀮𑀢𑀺 (*ḍālati), from an unattested Sanskrit root *ढल् (ḍhal), perhaps from Sanskrit ध्वृ (dhvṛ, to hurt, bend, cause to fall). Cognate with Marathi डाळणे (ḍāḷṇe, to pile, stack), Assamese ঢলা (dhola).
