Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *garHás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *garHás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷorh₃-ó-s, from the root *gʷerh₃- (“to swallow, devour, eat”). The Sanskrit root is गॄ (gṝ, “to devour”).
