Inherited from Prakrit 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀺 (khāṇi), 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀻 (khāṇī), from Sanskrit खानि (khāni, “mine”). Doublet of खनि (khani) and खानि (khāni). Compare Punjabi ਖਾਣ (khāṇ), Gujarati ખાણ (khāṇ), ખાણી (khāṇī), Marathi खाण (khāṇ), and Bengali খাদ (khad).
