Compare Hebrew שָׁוֶה‎ (shavé) and Arabic سَوِيّ‎ (sawiyy). The sense of “colon” is a learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܫ̈ܘܲܝܵܐ‎ (šwayyā), its plural form; compare also borrowed into Hebrew שְׁוָא‎ (shva), therefore cognate of English schwa and doublet of ܫܘܵܐ‎ (šwā).
