From Aramaic זַיְנָא (zaynā), borrowed from Old Iranian *zaina-; compare Hebrew זַיִן (záyin), Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀 (zaēna, “weapon”), Middle Persian 𐫉𐫏𐫗 (zyn /zēn/, “weapon; armor”), Old Armenian զէն (zēn) (a loanword). The sense of “semicolon” is a learned borrowing from Classical Syriac.
