From Proto-Pathan *kəδáy < *kədáγ, from an ancestral Middle Iranian form *kadág,[1] from Proto-Iranian *katákah (“house”), diminutive of *kátah. Compare Persian کده (kade, “house”), and Old Armenian քաղաք (kʻałakʻ), an Iranian borrowing.
