Etymology

Suggested from the verb كرتمك (kärtmäk, “to notch, to indent”) because of originally meaning a sort of pear which was grafted. In any case a word of great age, as witnessed by the borrowings Ancient Greek ἀχράς (akhrás), ἄχερδος (ákherdos, “wild pear”), Ancient Macedonian ἀγέρδα (agérda, “wild pear tree”). Also reflected in dialectal Turkish kertme (“pear”), Ossetian кӕрдо (kærdo, “pear”), Chechen кхор (qor, “pear”), Ingush кхор (qor, “pear”), Hungarian körte, körtvély (“pear”). See also Proto-Turkic *kertme.
