Likely related to Classical Syriac ܥܒܐ (ʾāḇā, “forest, thicket”), the root ع ب ب (ʕ-b-b) related to swellings and thickenings being the Aramaic reflex of the Arabic root ض ب ب (ḍ-b-b) related to sticking, density, tumorosity. Later duplicated to عُبْعُب (ʕubʕub).
