Etymology

Inherited from Common Turkic *tamu (hell) ultimately borrowed from Sogdian 𐽂𐼺𐼴 (tmw, hell) from Proto-Indo-Iranian *támHas (darkness).[1]

Cognate with Turkish tamu, Uzbek tamugʻ and Bashkir тамуҡ (tamuq).
