From Middle Persian [script needed] (bwl /bōr/, “reddish-brown, bay [horse]”). Cognate with Ossetian бур (bur, “yellow”), Northern Kurdish bor (“grey”) and the Old Armenian loanword բորենի (boreni, “hyena”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (“brown”).
