Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾhwl /āxwarr/, manger; stable). Compare Northern Kurdish axur, afirr, Central Kurdish ئاخوڕ (axurr), Pashto آخور (āxor, manger, trough; stable, stall) and Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian ախոռ (axoṙ), Georgian ახორი (axori), ახური (axuri), Classical Syriac ܐܟܘܪ (ʾāḵwar). The Iranian word literally means “a place for eating” and ultimately goes back to Proto-Iranian *hwar- (to eat, consume), on which see خوردن (xwardan).
