From соп (sop, “mound (dialectal)”) + -ка (-ka), from Proto-Slavic *sъpъ, related to сы́пать (sýpatʹ, “to pour, to strew”). Per Vasmer, meaning "volcano" presumably influenced by сопе́ть (sopétʹ, “to wheeze”); Czech sopka (“volcano”), Slovak sopka (“volcano”) are borrowings from Russian.
