First attested in the early 17th century. Probably borrowed from Middle Polish, from Old Polish oksza, from Proto-Slavic *okъša, from Proto-Germanic *akwisī, probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʷsih₂, from *h₂eḱ-. Compare Middle Russian окшева (okševa).
