Etymology

Formally from Proto-Slavic *debiti (probably reanalyzed from Proto-Slavic *deběti[1]), with no exact cognates in other Slavic languages. Probably akin to dialectal Serbo-Croatian дѐпсти (to lie in wait, to ambush), dialectal Russian дебе́ть (debétʹ, to stand in one place)[2] (ě/i-conj.).

According to Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, related to dialectal Bulgarian дябам (djabam, to pervade, to acquire superiority).
