χρεμετίζω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

There is no exact outer-Greek correspondance to the verb, but the root *gʰrem- (to resound, thunder, grumble, roar) is Proto-Indo-European. Compare Lithuanian grumù (to thunder, roar), Proto-Germanic *grimmaz (grim, fierce), Proto-Slavic *gromъ (thunder) and Persian غرم (ğaram, fury). Within Greek see χρόμος (khrómos, crashing sound) and χρόμαδος (khrómados, crash, fragor).
