Latin Aetna, in turn from either Ancient Greek Αἴτνη (Aítnē, “Aetna”) or αἴθω (aíthō, “I burn”), or from a Sicanian dialect Italic base *aith-na (“fiery one”), all from Proto-Indo-European *ai-dh, from *h₂eydʰ- (“burn; fire”).
