One who was not precise with reading the Shema or did not make an audible sound |
מי שלא דקדק בקריאת שמע או לא השמיע לאזנו |
Paragraph 1 — Even though it is a mitzvah to be precise with the individual letters of the Shema, one who reads without being precise has fulfilled his obligation. |
סעיף א — אף על פי שמצוה לדקדק באותיותיה קראה ולא דקדק בהן יצא: |
Paragraph 2 — One may read the Shema in any language, but one should be careful to avoid mistakenly saying other words in that language and be precise just as if it was in Hebrew.[1] |
סעיף ב — יכול לקרותה בכל לשון ויזהר מדברי שיבוש שבאותו לשון וידקדק בו כמו בלשון הקודש: |
Paragraph 3 — One must be able to hear the words of the Shema coming out of the mouth, but if one does not hear them, one has nevertheless fulfilled the obligation as long as the words have been said[2] |
סעיף ג' — צריך להשמיע לאזנו מה שמוציא בפיו ואם לא השמיע לאזנו יצא ובלבד שיוציא בשפתיו: |
Paragraph 4 — If due to illness or another mitigating factor one read the Shema silently[3] one has fulfilled his obligation. Rem"a: And one does this from the start if one is in a place that is not completely clean and one cannot clean it up due to various factors one thinks about the Shema in his heart. And this is only if the place is not completely filthy because it is is forbidden to ponder matters of Torah in filthy places (Beit Yosef Chapter 25) |
סעיף ד — אם מחמת חולי או אונס אחר קרא קריאת שמע בלבו יצא.

Paragraph 5 — The person leading prayer must make his voice heard with "Shema Yisrael" in order that the congregation will hear and will glorify Hashem[4] together. |
סעיף ה — צריך שליח צבור להשמיע קולו בשמע ישראל כדי שישמעו הקהל וימליכו שם שמים יחד:
