The arrondissement of Mende is an arrondissement of France; it is part of the Lozère département in the Occitanie region. Its capital is the city of Mende.

History

When the Lozère department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Mende was part of that original department.[1]

Geography

It is the largest arrondissement of the department, with an area of 3,479.4 km2 (1,343.4 sq mi).[2] It has a population of 63,047 inhabitants and a density of 18.1 inhabitants/km².[3]

The arrondissement covers the northern part of the department and is bordered by the Cantal department to the northwest, the Haute-Loire department to the northeast), by the Ardeche department to the east, by the arrondissement of Florac to the south and by the Aveyron department to the west.

The only important city is Mende with 11,542 people living there in 2014. Other towns are Marvejols (4,882) and Saint-Chély-d'Apcher (4,169).[3]
